One year afterThe area is still a wasteland littered with debris, twisted metal and concrete slabs.
It is fenced off because of the danger of asbestos poisoning.
The owners of S.E. Fireworks, are convicted in April 2002 for importing and selling illegal fireworks, breaking safety codes and violating storage licenses. They are cleared of the more serious charge of criminal negligence.
Also, Andre De Vries is convicted to 15 years for arsoning of SE Fireworks. Two years later, mr De Vries is cleared of charges and paid compensation of EUR 125,000 for being kept in prison. Under large pressure to catch 'the guy who did it', the conviction had been false.
In 2005 a monument was made on the site, after a competition. The concrete slabs that were pressed into the ground by the explosions are part of the monument.
